Cracks appear,houses dismantled in Mizoram town

Aizawl, Aug 8 (PTI) At least 70 families were affected and three houses dismantled as cracks appeared on the ground in the endangered Bazar Veng locality of Mamit town in Mizoram-Tripura border, official sources from.

Around ten families had abandoned their houses and the rest of the families were scared of staying in their houses at night, the sources said.

Geologists who inspected the cracks said the soil was sinking due to heavy soil erosion and a check dam had to be constructed in the lower side of the town to save the houses.

Meanwhile, an official statement today said that Deputy Speaker John Rotluangliana, who visited the town yesterday disbursed Rs 20,000 each to the three families whose houses were dismantled and Rs 2,000 each to other affected families.PTI HCV MM

Tombs swept away by landslide

Aizawl, Aug 8 (PTI) A number of tombs were swept away in a massive landslide at the cemetery oft Dawrpui Vengthar locality here yesterday.

A total of 22 wooden tombs and five tombstones were recovered by local Young Mizo Association (YMA) volunteers as heavy monsoon continue to lash the state.

"The ground at the burial place was still moving and measures are being taken to prevent seepage of water in the soil," President of Dawrpui Vengthar YMA branch Lallianzuala said.Besides the tombs a number of skeletal remains were also recovered, he said.
